Intra-uterine insemination using the partner’s sperm (IUI-H) is an option where the man’s sperm quality is normal or slightly reduced. However, in case of very low sperm count or very poor sperm quality, the use of donor sperm or in vitro fertilisation (IVF) with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) may be required.
Prior to the insemination, the sperm is prepared in the laboratory and is then inserted into the uterus when the woman is ovulating. This procedure increases the number of motile sperm that reach the far end of the fallopian tubes, where fertilisation normally occurs. The sperm cells used are carefully selected. By timing insemination to take place very close to ovulation, the chance of fertilisation is increased.
Requirements for the woman
Insemination can also be used when the woman has ovulation problems (e.g. PCOS) or suffers from endometriosis. Insemination is only possible if the woman has at least one normal fallopian tube. Therefore, an examination of the patency of the tubes is mandatory before treatment start.
If we cannot determine the cause of your childlessness (unexplained infertility), you have a good chance of becoming pregnant by means of insemination.
Insemination is not as successful as IVF. Most women become pregnant within the first 2 to 3 inseminations. Therefore we offer 3 inseminations to women up to 43 years. However, we recommend that you go directly to IVF if you are 40 years of age, as the chances with insemination above 40 years are low. We do not offer insemination treatment to women above 43 years, as the chance of having a child in this age is too small.
Referral from your GP
If you have a Danish social security number (cpr. number) and bring references for both of you from your own general practitioner, the insemination treatment is free of charge apart from the cost of medicine for the first child. Patients without a Danish cpr. number or without a referral have to pay.
